July - The need for floating toilets and rainwater tanks in Cambodia

THE NEED FOR FLOATING TOILETS AND RAINWATER TANKS IN CAMBODIA Many of the communities EWB serve are situated in very challenging environments where traditional solutions simply do not work. In Cambodia, in many areas the ground water sources are contaminated by arsenic, which leads to poisoning. Other communities flood annually, meaning that pit toilets or piped sewerage systems are not options. These communities need unique, innovative solutions – and that’s where engineers can help! Currently less than 30% of Cambodia’s rural population have access to sanitation. Sanitation solutions reduce diarrheal diseases and improve a community’s nutritional, educational and economic health. EWB is partnering with multiple organisation across Cambodia to provide rainwater tanks to households, schools and health clinics in rural areas. EWB is also developing innovative floating toilets for households that float on the Tonle Sap Lake in Cambodia. TRIBE GOAL - JULY! And this, Tribe, is what we're giving together for this month - to provide rainwater tanks and toilets to households and schools in Cambodia. It's time to GO GIVE a little together, to bring change together! $50 – Small household water storage unit $80 – Toilet in Cambodia $100 – Community water point in Cambodia $500 – Rain water tank for a school in Cambodia

Engineers Without Borders Australia

Engineers Without Borders Australia has pioneered the ‘humanitarian engineering philosophy’ of community-centred and community-led development. We believe that every engineer can be a change agent of a socially just and sustainable world. Working in Australia and overseas, we are committed to ensuring people in disadvantaged communities have a better quality of life.

Our ethos is to build the capacity of local communities to manage their own engineering needs, ensuring long-term sustainable community development. We do this by researching, developing and scaling up innovative, appropriate technologies in the fields of water, sanitation in challenging environments, accessible built environment, and renewable energy.

We believe communities, corporates, government, universities and industry bodies working together can create sustainable impact together.
