    RIDBC’s 2014 Tax Appeal - Morgan’s Story

When Morgan was just seven months old, she was diagnosed with Coat’s disease, a rare condition affecting both her eyes and meaning she has no vision at all. Morgan’s family, who live in Tamworth contacted the Royal Institute for Deaf and Blind Children (RIDBC) on the way home from the hospital. It was a life-changing call, not only for Morgan, but for her whole family. RIDBC helps hundreds of children like Morgan by delivering a tailored program of education and therapy services into the homes of children with hearing or vision loss. Where these children live in rural, remote or regional areas of Australia, RIDBC uses high-quality videoconferencing technology to overcome the tyranny of distance. Please donate today to help children like Morgan access the specialist services they need wherever they are in Australia. With your support, we can break down the barriers of hearing and vision loss for children wherever they are in Australia.

Centennial Parklands Wild Play Children’s Garden

"If children lose contact with nature, they won't fight for it". With half of their time spent looking at screens, the next generation will be poorly equipped to defend the natural world from harm. If children don't feel the texture and function of the natural world when they are young, how can we expect them to protect it as they grow older? Centennial Parklands environmental education program is leading the way in nature-based education and play. The number of children the programs can reach however is limited by the available facilities. The Wild Play Children's Garden in Centennial Park will be so much more than a playground. It will be a living play space accessible to all. It will be created with natural materials that will inspire outdoor play, learning and a love of the environment. The Children's Garden will be a safe, community environment where children can engage in managed risk-taking nature-based play and participate in formal environmental education programs in an outdoor setting. By making a donation dedicated to The Children's Garden project you will be helping to deliver a valued gift to the community as well as leaving a lasting legacy for the Parklands. Donations of $2 and over are tax-deductible.

    HELP PROTECT WOMEN & GIRLS

HELP PROTECT WOMEN AND GIRLS FROM SEXUAL VIOLENCE Every day, every hour, rape is being used as a weapon of war. In many countries in the world, women and girls are suffering brutal physical and sexual violence in alarming numbers, whether their countries are at war or not. The violence ruins lives, destroys families and destabilises communities. It breaks women’s spirits, leaving them traumatised and shamed, rejected and alone. You can make sure that these women do not have to live through this alone. You can ensure they receive the help they need. Help us reach $25 000 by the end of the year to provide support for survivors of sexual violence. $65 could help provide group therapy and psycho-social counselling for women traumatised by sexual violence. $95 could help train 15 people as women’s rights activists, helping to change men and boys’ attitudes towards violence and abuse. $186 could help provide two months’ accommodation and skills training for young mothers and victims of sexual abuse who have nowhere else to turn. $250 could help train 15 police officers in India to respond appropriately to women survivors of violence. Mariam is a young survivor of sexual abuse in Mali, one of the poorest countries in the world. Three in every four people live in poverty and up to 50 per cent of women have experienced domestic violence and gang rapes in Mali. A quarter of girls in Mali are forced into marriage before the age of 15. Mariam was kidnapped and gang raped by a group of men over a number of nights. “There were four of them – they forced me into their vehicle and chained my arms. Three other girls were also there…each time they came in groups of three, four and sometimes five.” Sadly, for many women like Mariam, there is no place to turn for support. But with your help, UN Women can be there for more and more women. More funding is needed to help women and girls like Mariam and set up more specialist units for their support. Please send a gift of $65, $95 or $186 right away, to help reach our goal of $25 000 to provide victims of violence with the support they need. Your donation is powerful. DONATE TODAY to change the lives of thousands of women and girls across the world by offering medical care, counselling, access to justice, safety and security and the opportunity to create a better future for themselves.

    Train a Health Leader

You can help build healthier communities! We have a goal to train 1,000 young women as health facilitators to transform poor communities across India. The Community Health Facilitator program trains women from local communities – teaching the basics of health education, such as illness prevention, nutrition and early childhood care. Each leader then goes on to train approximately 200-300 additional households – and also introduces health-related businesses and savings groups – in order to bring about long-lasting change within their community. We urgently need your support. A donation of $165 will enable one woman to be trained as a Community Health Facilitator and impact hundreds of families. (But any amount can make a difference!) Donate NOW to this cause.

    Education For All

Every child should have the opportunity to finish basic education. In the Philippines, this is somewhat of a challenge with as much as a third of children not graduating from elementary school. This is due to poor families being unable to provide children with the school supplies they need to continue on with their schooling. These children end up in child labour working the farms and as a result the poverty cycle continues. Help us break this trend! Right now, we need to raise $30,000 to support students in schools across Manila and La Union regions of Philippines. We request your help to provide them with school uniforms and school supplies to keep them in school. We are also asking you to help us support under performing students to improve their grades through enrichment tutorial classes aimed at improving their reading, writing and maths. Students who are supported through their education are less likely to cut class, join gangs or get hooked on cigarettes, alcohol and drugs. They will have an increased chance of progressing to the next grade and attaining a basic level of education. By pledging your support to ICARE we can raise $30,000 and support up to 1000 students across 8 schools in Manila and La Union regions of Philippines. Let’s focus on the delivery of a quality education as a pathway out of poverty! Please help children achieve their full potential through education to break out of the poverty cycle!

July - The need for floating toilets and rainwater tanks in Cambodia

THE NEED FOR FLOATING TOILETS AND RAINWATER TANKS IN CAMBODIA Many of the communities EWB serve are situated in very challenging environments where traditional solutions simply do not work. In Cambodia, in many areas the ground water sources are contaminated by arsenic, which leads to poisoning. Other communities flood annually, meaning that pit toilets or piped sewerage systems are not options. These communities need unique, innovative solutions – and that’s where engineers can help! Currently less than 30% of Cambodia’s rural population have access to sanitation. Sanitation solutions reduce diarrheal diseases and improve a community’s nutritional, educational and economic health. EWB is partnering with multiple organisation across Cambodia to provide rainwater tanks to households, schools and health clinics in rural areas. EWB is also developing innovative floating toilets for households that float on the Tonle Sap Lake in Cambodia. TRIBE GOAL - JULY! And this, Tribe, is what we're giving together for this month - to provide rainwater tanks and toilets to households and schools in Cambodia. It's time to GO GIVE a little together, to bring change together! $50 – Small household water storage unit $80 – Toilet in Cambodia $100 – Community water point in Cambodia $500 – Rain water tank for a school in Cambodia
